Château Moya Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux AOC 2018

(0 customer reviews)
£36.00

More stock coming in the autumn. Château Moya produces excellent Merlot-led wines from one of Bordeaux’s satellite appellations, Castillon Côte de Bordeaux. Perhaps less well-known than other Right Bank Bordeaux wines like nearby St Emilion but no less elegant or complex. It’s an elegant red wine full of red & black fruit flavours – redcurrants, raspberries, ripe plums, blackcurrants

Description

Château Moya Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux 2018 is a blend of 93% Merlot (compared to 85% in sister wine, Château Gaby Canon Fronsac) and 7% Cabernet Sauvignon). It is a certified organic Right Bank Bordeaux from a lesser-known satellite Bordeaux appellation called Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux, close to the better known wine appellation of St Emilion. The wine-maker at Château Moya is the same as at Château Gaby, Damien Landouar. Previously the Moya wines may have been in Gaby’s shadow but Moya goes from strength to strength each year and is really something to write home about – old-style Moya which I also loved was a very young fruit-forward wine but these later vintages taste more evolved as if they have more than 5 years on the clock. The tannins are soft and integrated. Given the dominance of Merlot and the warm vintage of 2018, the nose and palate of Château Moya Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux 2018 are steeped in red fruits – redcurrants, raspberries, ripe plums – but there are also black fruits showing through, the fruit-forward character driven by the warm vintage. Both Moya and Gaby pick their grapes as late as possible to ensure full maturity. That is also why the alcohol level is quite high – but, fear not, it is fully integrated in with the ripe fruit flavours and with fresh acidity so you will not notice it.

The wine has been aged in oak – split 50% in new barrels and 50% in 1 to 2 year old barrels – which gives it a smooth texture and hints of oak ageing on the palate like vanilla, cloves and chocolate notes. Whilst old-style Moya which I loved was a more young fruit-forward wine, this 2018 vintage tastes even more evolved. The tannins are soft and integrated. This is a very elegant and complex wine – and it’s certified organic.

Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux, formerly known as Côtes de Castillon, is one of the satellite appellations of Bordeaux, situated to the east of St Emilion. Château Moya is the sister château to Château Gaby whose Canon-Fronsac AOC is also available from Wines With Attitude®. Following organic principles since 2009, Château Moya has been formally certified as organic (“agriculture biologique”) since 2013.
