Description
Aurelio Settimo Barolo 2011 is a DOCG wine, meaning it is recognised as one of Italy’s most prestigious wines. In fact, Barolo, known as the “king of wines and the wine of kings”, is considered to be one of the world’s best red wines. It is produced from 100% Nebbiolo, is elegant, silky smooth with powerful flavours of cherries, plums, coffee and liquorice.
I added Aurelio Settimo Barolo 2011 to the portfolio because of the popularity of Aurelio Settimo Langhe Nebbiolo with customers. The winemaker at Aurelio Settimo is the lovely Tiziana Settimo and she brings out the best from the vineyards in all her wines. 100% Nebbiolo, Barolo needs care to avoid the naturally high acidity and tannins of the grape from overpowering the wine. Tiziana keeps yields low, exercises careful maceration on the skins to avoid over-extraction of tannins and colour and ages the wine for the required minimum two years in old oak to avoid the woody aromas and flavours taking over from the cherry & plum fruit flavours.
2011 was very hot in Barolo and whilst that helps lower the natural acidity, extra care needs to be taken to avoid high alcohol. In this Barolo the alcohol, tannins and fruit flavours are beautifully balanced and this vintage is drinking beautifully now. Barolo can age for many, many years. It’s a really elegant wine. The 2015 vintage is also available.
