This mixed case of French Classic Wines showcases three red and three white French wines (two bottles of each), all of which are considered classics – and the wines are all from the Wines With Attitude main list. Cheap “filler wines” are never added to Wines With Attitude’s mixed cases.
French wine sales in the UK have fallen over the last twenty years or more as the wider “New World” wine region continues to improve its wine offering and its marketing. But there is no denying that France still produces some fabulous, very recognisable and sought-after wines. In addition France is closer to home and so it could be argued that drinking French wines is helping the planet more since a much smaller carbon footprint is involved compared to that of Australian wines for example.
After deciding to curate this mixed case of French classic wines, I realised that I had set myself a near-impossible task. It was very difficult to narrow down my choices but in the end I included a very elegant Left Bank Bordeaux (Cabernet Sauvignon dominant), a Red Burgundy, a Châteauneuf du Pape, an unoaked Chablis, an amazing Muscadet and a very refined white Burgundy. See the What’s Included tab for a summary or click on the gallery of photos of each of the wines to see a larger bottle image. The contents of this case may change from time to time depending on which wines I have in stock but you can be sure that they will all be great versions of what are considered to be classic French wines.
If you would prefer a case of all white French wines or all red French wines or a case of six of these French wines, contact me by email. Or check out my other mixed cases. Santé!
2 x Domaine Bachey-Legros Santenay “Clos des Hâtes” Vieilles Vignes 2020 (Smooth Elegant Red)
This is a particularly expressive, old vine, single vineyard Pinot Noir with a lovely velvety mouthfeel; a real treat and good value for what has become an expensive region.
2 x Domaine Lavantureux Frères Chablis 2020 (Crisp Light White)
This is a lovely unoaked Chardonnay displaying classic Chablis characteristics – apple and lemon, minerality and floral notes; fresh and light yet really smooth texture and a long, long finish. Delicious!
2 x Domaine de Maucaillou Margaux 2018 (Smooth Elegant Red)
Classic Left Bank Bordeaux from one of the most prestigious appellations, Margaux. The finesse, smoothness and refined fruity aromas make Margaux the most feminine appellation of the Médoc.
2 x Véronique Gunther-Chéreau Muscadet Sèvre-et-Maine Sur Lie Anima Mea 2020 (Aromatic White)
Gunther-Chéreau’s Muscadet Sèvre-et-Maine Sur Lie ‘Anima Mea’ from the Loire Valley is old vine, terroir-focussed, organic Muscadet with distinctive gunflinty notes, smooth texture and stone fruit and citrus flavours on a long finish
2 x Famille Perrin Les Crus Châteauneuf du Pape “Les Sinards” 2021 (Rich Spicy Red)
Classic Châteauneuf du Pape from the Les Crus branch of Famille Perrin wineries; produced from the traditional CNdP trio of grapes, Grenache which makes up the majority, Syrah & Mourvedre this is a rich, spicy wine with ripe fruit flavours that balances complexity and finesse even in its youth.
2 x Domaine Gachot Monot St Aubin Blanc 2017 (Aromatic White)
Côte-de-Beaune white Burgundy from Saint Aubin, a favourite amongst Burgundy devotés as a source of good value principally because it is not as well-known as neighbouring appellations Puligny- and Chassagne-Montrachet. This wine smells divine – orange blossom & tangerine – and is a very elegant white Chardonnay.
